Pan paniscus, or the Bonobo, lives in the tropical rainforest of west central Africa in The Democratic Republic of the Congo, formerly known as Zaire. Although they are sometimes referred to as the Pygmy Chimpanzee, (because they once lived near pygmies), they are not Chimpanzees.  The Bonobo shares the same Pan genus as its chimp cousin, but there are enough physical, behavior, dietary, and DNA differences to make them distinct species.   For more information on Bonobos, see the Bonobo Links section below.

The Bonobo is an endangered species, so we don't expect to obtain any Y-DNA from Bonobos in the wild. However, there are several zoos in the United States and Europe where Bonobos reside and are watched over.

Y-DNA Test Results

These are the Y-DNA results to-date of the Bonobo participants.  Click on the Kit # to view more information about the individual  Newer results have a purple block to the left of the kit number. Normally, the Modal Hyplotype is what we believe the Y-DNA of "original" common Bonobo ancestor looked like. However, since the time frame involved is so great and the samples are so few, it only represents what our Bonobo participant's typical Hyplotype appears to be.  Red cells show where an individual varies from the modal. Combined pink cells represent "connected" markers where the actual difference is counted as one.
